Fluval 305
I find the Fluval 305 a brilliant filter, given me no problems at all (1 and a half years so far) and is very easy to maintain. The trick to efficient filtration is to get the right media in the right order, put cheap aquarium filter wool (~£2 for a bag that will last you nearly a year) in the bottom two baskets for excellent (much better than the sponges) mechanical filteration and fill the other with biological media (like the biomax ceramic rings).
Save the carbon that comes with the filter only for when it is needed - like removing medications.
For the price, there is no better filter IMO. My next filter will be another from the 05 series, probably the 105.
It should be noted that any quoted flow rates are without media and a bit exaggerated...it's the same for any manufacturer. And it's really not all that difficult to work out where to place the media or which way they water flows...
