One should keep nitrate levels as low as possible, because nitrate, more than anything else, allows algae to thrive when it reaches levels of more than 50mg/l.
From a nitrate level of approx. 200-250mg/l nitrobacter bacteria stop functioning properly. This is recognizable when nitrite levels begin to rise. This happens because when nitrate levels become to high, it prevents the enzyme activity of the bacterial. (source: JBL)
A very effective way of removing nitrate is using a special filter on a ion exchange basis - such as the JBL NitratEx. This will selectively remove nitrate from your water.
Nitrate removal allows you to use water longer before replacement (approx. 4 weeks as opposed to 1 or 2).
